TUCSON, Ariz. -- Led by a career-best 5-under-par 67 from sophomore Tom Johnson (Fair Oaks, Calif./Del Campo), Northwestern's men's golf team sits in sixth place at the 10-team U.S. Collegiate Championships. The event, which was originally scheduled to be played in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, is being played at the par-72 Tucson National Golf Club. The University of Arizona is the host school.
Johnson's first round total places him in a four-way tie for fourth place. Oklahoma State's Hunter Mahan shot a 10-under-par 62 to set the pace in this year's event. A total of 17 golfers finished the first 18 holes under par.
Northwestern (289) is tied for sixth place in the team standings with No. 5 TCU, and is positioned behind No. 9 Texas (278), No. 46 Houston (280), No. 6 Oklahoma State (281), No. 1 Georgia Tech (282) and No. 57 Arizona State (286).
Senior Chris Thayer (Richmond, Va./Godwin) fired his best round of the spring with a 1-over-par 73 and he is tied for 24th. Junior Bjorn Widerstedt (Vasteras, Sweden/Flagler College) is one stroke behind and tied for 30th place. Sophomore Casey Strunk (Phoenix, Ariz./Thunderbird) is competing officially in his first tournament this season. He shot a 5-over-par 77 (47th place). Junior Scott Harrington (Portland, Ore./Jesuit) rounded out the Wildcat golfers, shooting 3-over-par 75 (39th place).
Second-round play continues Saturday at 7:30 a.m. MST.
