BOERNE, Texas -- Northwestern's women's golf team, ranked 31st nationally in the latest Golfweek/Sagarin poll, played like one of the nation's elite teams on Friday and nearly overcame an 11-stroke first-round deficit at the Baylor-Tapatio Springs Shootout. By shooting a second-round best 301, the Wildcats fell three strokes shy of first-place Texas Tech and placed fourth. Baylor and Tulane, the first-round leader, finished a stroke behind the Red Raiders for second place.
Freshman Ina Kim (Encino, Calif./Harvard-Westlake) turned in one of the best rounds of the second day, firing an even-par 72 to finish in a two-way tie for fourth place. That was the third-best individual round of the day. Ina's sister, Hana Kim (Encino, Calif./Brentwood), shot a 75 on Friday and finished in a 10th-place tie.
Junior Elizabeth Burden (Lake Bluff, Ill./Lake Forest) and senior Emily Gilley (Flossmoor, Ill./Homewood-Flossmoor) placed 20th and 26th, respectively, with two-day scores of 157 and 158. Sophomore Lauren Grzebien (Saunderstown, R.I./Narragansett) shot a 5-over-par 77 in the second round and finished 49th.
The Wildcats return to action next weekend (April 5-7) at the Bryan National Collegiate Golf Tournament in Greensboro, N.C.
