HOMESTEAD, Fla. - Northwestern's baseball team opened its nine-game road trip with a 5-0 loss to Drexel University at Kings Park in Homestead, Fla. Drexel scored four runs in the top of the eighth and one more in the ninth to hand NU its seventh loss of the season.
Starting pitcher, sophomore Dan Konecny (Ripon, Wis./Ripon), threw eight strong innings, giving up four runs (two earned) and striking out four. The eight innings was Konecny's longest outing of the year.
Senior Andy Adams (Mt. Prospect, Ill./Prospect) came on in relief of Konecny in the ninth inning, giving up one unearned run.
Drexel's starting pitcher, Nic Beecher, threw a complete-game five-hit shutout.
Northwestern's only scoring threat came in the ninth inning, when the 'Cats loaded the bases before grounding into a game-ending double play.
Freshman Chris Hayes (Lake Forest, Ill./Lake Forest), who pinch-hit in the ninth, lined his first collegiate hit into rightfield during the ninth-inning rally.
