Softball Beats Hawaii to go 2-0 During the First Day of the Chevron Invitational

HONOLULU - Led by Erin Jancic's 4-for-4 performance at the plate, the Northwestern Wildcats defeated host Hawaii, 8-5, at the Chevron Invitational. The 'Cats are now 2-0 at the tournament and 7-6-1 overall.

Jancic put on a show for the fans with four hits, four runs, four RBI and back-to-back home runs during the game. For the day, the senior was 6-for-8 with six runs, six RBI and three home runs.

The 'Cats broke open the 1-1 tie in the third on Carri Leto's sacrifice fly that scored Rane Gunderson. Even though 10 more runs were scored in the contest, NU never relinquished the lead after that. The 'Cats added another in the the inning when Jancic crossed the plate on a Gretchen Barnes RBI single.

Hawaii got one back in the top half of the fourth, but the 'Cats countered with three more insurance runs in the bottom half of the inning on Jancic's first home run.

Hawaii attempted another rally in the sixth, scoring two runs to bring the score within two, 6-4, but Lauren Schwendimann was able to get the right fielder to ground out to third for the final out of the inning.

Schwendimann picked up her sixth win of the season, scattering eight hits and allowing five runs.
