MADISON, N.J. - Two-time All-American Kate Rudkin (Boulder, Colo./Boulder) is leading a strong showing of the Northwestern women's fencing team after day one of the 2002 NCAA Championships at Drew University in Madison, N.J.
Rudkin is currently fifth in the ep?e competition, while freshman Lauren Dunn (Sacramento, Calif./Del Camp) is fifth in sabre. Freshman Julia F?ldi (Budapest, Hungary/Szent Istv?n Gimn?zium) finished out the first four rounds in seventh place in a tough foil pool. Rounding out the NU contingency is senior Kristen Dorf (St. Paul, Minn./St. Paul Academy), who is currently 19th in foil.
The four qualifiers combined for 35 total victories, placing NU in sixth place in the preliminary team rankings.
Rudkin posted 11 wins in Thursday's action, losing only three bouts. Dunn and F?ldi each recorded 10 wins and 4 losses. Results did not indicate which fencers they competed against.
The final rounds, as well as semifinals and finals, will take place Friday. Overall team results will be announced Sunday at the conclusion of the men's championships.
