RIO MAR, Puerto Rico -- With its top men's golfer disqualified, Northwestern's 48th-ranked Wildcats shot a 320 (32-over-par) on Tuesday to finish in a 13th-place tie at the prestigious Puerto Rico Classic. The Wildcats finished in a three-way tie with Virginia and Kent State.
Sophomore Tom Johnson (Fair Oaks, Calif./Del Campo), rated 21st in the latest Golfweek/Sagarin individual ranking, signed an incorrect scorecard after shooting a 2-under-par 70 on Monday. He would have recorded a 76 for the third round, but signed a card stating he had shot a 75. The Wildcats would have finished with a 311 for the final round and placed 13th alone.
Georgia Tech, the nation's top-ranked squad, won the tournament for the third straight year by shooting 35-under-par for the three rounds. Clemson and Purdue, the host school, finished second and third, respectively, and were the only other two teams to finish below par. Georgia Tech's Troy Matteson won the individual crown, shooting 11-under-par.
With Johnson unavailable, junior Scott Harrington (Portland, Ore./Jesuit) posted the Wildcats' best third-round score with 4-over-par 76. He finished 15-over-par and tied for 56th place. Junior Bjorn Widerstedt (Vasteras, Sweden), who was 1-over-par after two rounds, shot a 79 on Tuesday to finish in a 40th-place tie. Widerstedt and Johnson began the final round with identical 36-hole scores of 145.
Chris Thayer (Richmond, Va./Godwin) and T.C. Ford (Covington, La./Mandeville) finished in 64th and 71st place, respectively.
The Wildcats take a one-month break before returning to action March 25 at the Morris Williams Intercollegiate Tournament in Austin, Texas.
