Men's Tennis Defeats Michigan, 4-3, To Remain Undefeated In Conference

Feb. 24, 2002

ANN ARBOR, Mich. - In a weekend sweep of Big Ten matches, the No. 50 Northwestern men's tennis team defeated No. 46 Michigan by a 4-3 score Sunday.

The 'Cats move to 8-3 overall and remain undefeated in conference play at 3-0.

The only loss NU had in the doubles round was to the only ranked doubles team, as No. 44 Henry Beam and Matt Lockin defeated seniors Joost Hol (Newport Beach, Calif./Foothill) and Ryan Edlefsen (Eden Prairie, Minn./Bloomington Jefferson) 8-4. Despite U-M's ranking and the fact that Edlefsen and Hol have always played the No. 1 doubles position, this match took place at the No. 2 slot.

Another lineup change for the Wildcats took place in the singles competition. Freshman Tommy Hanus (Palatine, Ill./Palatine) made his debut at the No. 1 position, but fell to Beam, who is No. 57 in singles, 6-4, 7-6(5).

While NU's top three positions were defeated, the remaining three netters came through to secure the victory. At the No. 4 position, senior Jamie Sahara (Santa Maria, Calif./St. Joseph) clinched the team win with a 4-6, 6-3, 6-1 victory over Greg Novak.

The Wildcats return home to the Combe Tennis Center on March 2 to take on Indiana at noon.
