PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. -- Northwestern's men's golf team finished 15th at the high-powered Mercedes-Benz Collegiate Championship Tuesday afternoon. The tournament was held at Sawgrass Country Club, a 6,895-yard, par-72 course. The Championship also was presented by American Express Financial Advisors.
The Wildcats, ranked 45th in the latest Golfweek/Sagarin Collegiate rankings, posted a team score of 303 in the final round to fall from 12th to 15th on the last day of competition.
The tournament featured some of the nation's top golf programs, including defending NCAA national champion Florida, which captured the championship with an 8-over-par team score. The Wildcats finished 43 strokes behind the first-place Gators.
Sophomore Tom Johnson (Fair Oaks, Calif./Del Campo) led NU during the two-day tourney, shooting an 11-over-par 227 (79-72-76). He was tied for 39th. Other NU finishers were T.C. Ford (Covington, La./Mandeville), who finished 51st (80-77-74=231), Scott Harrington (Portland, Ore./Jesuit), who also finished 51st (75-77-79=231), Bjorn Widerstedt (Vasteras, Sweden), who finished 56th (77-76-79=232), and Chris Thayer (Richmond, Va./Godwin), who finished 64th (86-76-74=236).
Florida's Camilio Villegas, the country's fifth-ranked player, held onto his first-day lead to win the tournament with a 6-under-par 210.
Last year, the Wildcats finished 12th at the Mercedes-Benz Championship.
