Fencing Goes 2-2 In A Tough Weekend at Ohio State

Feb. 9, 2002

COLUMBUS, Ohio - The women's fencing team had a target on its back this past weekend, entering the Ohio State Duals with prior victories over No. 2 Notre Dame and the team NU is tied with at No. 6, Ohio State. The Buckeyes and the Fighting Irish evened the score as the Wildcats went 2-2 at the competition.

Northwestern, now 22-3 overall, defeated Case Western Reserve and Wayne State, 23-4 and 22-5, respectively. But the Wildcats fell to Notre Dame 23-4 and lost a closer decision to Ohio State, 15-12.

Against OSU, both the foil and ep?e squads won by scores of 5-4, while sabre fell, 7-2. Freshman Julia F?ldi (Budapest, Hungary/Szent Istv?n Gimn?zium) defeated OSU's twin foilists Hanna and Metta Thompson to secure the squad's victory.

While the score against Notre Dame is one of the worst losses the Wildcats have had in recent years, the individual bouts were far closer than the final would indicate. Four of the sabre bouts were tied at four touches before ND secured victories. NU's sabre squad lost, 7-2.

"Last week the close ones went to us," senior captain Lynn Zuckerman said, referring to a 15-12 win over Notre Dame at the Air Force Invitational. "This week the close ones went to them, and more."

Select members of the fencing team will compete at the Junior Olympics this weekend, and the team will resume competition in two weeks at the Wayne State Duals.
