EVANSTON, Ill. - It wasn't enough that Northwestern's men's swimming and diving team defeated Iowa in a two-day meet this weekend, the Wildcats (6-1, 2-1 Big Ten) had to leave their mark by breaking three pool records at the Fieldhouse Pool in Iowa City.
Sophomore Tony Swanson (Coon Rapids, Minn./Coon Rapids) now holds a pair of pool records in the 100 backstroke and the 200 IM. His leading backstroke time of 48.86 came as the leadoff in the 400 medley relay and broke the existing record of 49.24, set by Iowa's Nick Ninz in 2000.
In the 200 IM, Swanson broke a 16-year-old record by two seconds. The All-American's time of 1:48.62 beat out the standing record of 1:50.47, set by John Davy of Iowa in 1986.
Kellan O'Connor's (Phoenix, Ariz./Brophy Prep) first-place time of 1:46.48 in the 200 butterfly broke the 1:47.57 mark set by Ales Abersek of Iowa in 2000.
Despite taking second in the 400 IM, O'Connor also touched in under the previous pool record time with a 3:56.42. The winner of the race, Iowa's Marko Milenkovic, now holds the pool record with a 3:54.02.
The Wildcats are now gearing up for the Big Ten Championships, which begin on Feb. 28 in Bloomington, Ind.
