Women's Tennis Sweeps Brigham Young

EVANSTON, Ill. - Head Coach Claire Pollard was anxious to see how her 17th-ranked Wildcats (2-1, 0-0) would rebound from a 6-1 loss to No. 49 William and Mary a week ago. To her satisfaction, the Wildcats responded with a 7-0 win over No. 36 Brigham Young (1-4, 1-0) today at the Combe Tennis Center.

NU got off to a good start, sweeping doubles. Coach Pollard mixed up the teams today, pairing junior Marine Piriou with sophomore Jessica Rush at No. 1. The duo defeated BYU's Brooke Beverley and Lindsay Ferrell, 8-5. Lia Jackson and Simona Petrutiu teamed up at No. 2 to win 8-4 over Dominique Reynolds and Elizaveta Khoudoiarova. At No. 3, Ruth Barnes and Stacy Kokx defeated Lu Oswald and Nicole Schneider 8-6.

In singles, Piriou was first off the court, routing Beverly, 6-1, 6-1 at No. 1. Barnes easily defeated Schneider at No. 6 (6-3, 6-1) for NU's third point of the match. Jackson sealed the win for the 'Cats, winning 6-1, 6-2 over Ferrell. Rush won 6-3, 6-3 at No. 3. At No. 4, freshman Yung defeated Reynolds, 6-4, 6-2. Senior Petrutiu notched her first win of the season with a, 6-4, 7-5, victory over Khoudoiarova.

The Wildcats are back in action on Sunday when they host Utah. Match time is set for 11 a.m. at the Combe Tennis Center.
