Women's Swimming and Diving Loses to 13th-Ranked Notre Dame, 201-99

Jan. 31, 2002

South Bend, Ind. - Notre Dame's speed and depth proved to be too much for the Northwestern swimming and diving team to contend with, as the 'Cats dropped their third dual of the season, 201-99, Thursday afternoon in South Bend, Ind.

The Fighting Irish won eight individual swimming events and swept both the relays and springboard competitions to improve to 9-0 on the season. In three events, Notre Dame placed swimmers 1-2-3, showing the depth of its squad.

Three 'Cats (4-3-1) did win their individual events, including Katie Simmons (Carmel, Ind./Carmel) who won both the 100 (1:04.23) and 200 (2:16.74) backstroke for the second time this season. Her time in the 200 was an NCAA B cut.

Carmen Cosgrove (Perth, Australia/Nebraska) took top honors in the 100 fly (56.27) for the seventh time this season. She has placed first in every meet in that event except against No. 3 Auburn where she placed second. Cosgrove also placed second in the 100 freestyle (52.35) tonight.

Erin Swenson (Florissant, Mo./Hazelwood Central) touched first in the 200 freestyle (1:51.76) to win her second consecutive race.

On the springboard, Ashley Carter (Louisville, Ky./Sacred Heart Academy) was NU's top scorer, placing second on the 1-meter (278.31) and third on the 3-meter (266.77).

The 'Cats return to action tomorrow night for their final dual of the season. They meet the Michigan Wolverines at 3 p.m. in Ann Arbor.
