EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern University Head Football Coach Randy Walker announced today new duties for two of his assistant coaches, Mike Dunbar and Jerry Brown. Dunbar, who joined Walker's staff in 2001 as the tight ends, H-backs and special teams coach, is the Wildcats' new offensive coordinator. He replaces Kevin Wilson, who took a similar position at Oklahoma last month.
Brown, who has been on the Wildcats' coaching staff since 1993, has been named assistant head coach, a position that Wilson also held in addition to his offensive coordinator duties. "Jerry's experience at Northwestern and in the Big Ten is a valuable resource to the coaching staff and me," said Walker.
Dunbar, who has held head coaching positions at Central Washington (1983, 1987-91) and Northern Iowa (1997-2000), has served as offensive coordinator at two previous schools: Massachusetts (1984-86) and Toledo (1992-96). During his tenure with the Rockets, they posted a 36-18-2 record. In 1995, Toledo finished 11-0-1 overall, won the Mid-American Conference title and defeated Nevada in the Las Vegas Bowl. That year, the Rockets were ranked in every major national poll and set 21 offensive school records, including most points and most rushing touchdowns.
Overall, Dunbar owns an 83-24-1 career record as a head coach, including a 54-9-1 mark in six seasons with Central Washington.
"Mike has a lot of experience as a head coach and offensive coordinator," said Walker. "I have no doubts about his ability to keep our offense among the best in the Big Ten. When I was at Miami, we played Toledo and I was always impressed with his offense."
