EVANSTON, Ill. - In the final home fencing event of the 2002 season, Northwestern's women's fencing team held their opponents to no more than five bout wins apiece en route to a 4-0 sweep.

The sixth-ranked Wildcats are now 15-1 on the season, and head coach Laurie Schiller needs two more collegiate victories to reach 750 in his career. Schiller's record is now 748-376.

In the single-day, round-robin event, Northwestern defeated Purdue, Chicago, Lawrence and Minnesota. A plethora of Wildcat fencers were able to take to the strip, providing ample opportunity for some newcomers to participate in the competition.

But NU's starters were still impressive. Freshman foilist Julie F?ldi (Budapest, Hungary/Szent Istv?n Gimn?zium) remains undefeated on the season, picking up four more wins.

Senior sabre captain Kate Frambach (Elm Grove, Wis./Catholic Memorial) was the subject of conversation between two Chicago fencers who were watching their teammate, Maggie Samuels-Kalow. "That's amazing," one of the fencers said to the other. "She (Samuels-Kalow) just scored a point on the best girl in the Midwest." Frambach won the bout, 5-2.

NU is averaging 22 bout victories per dual this season. The foil squad has an unblemished record of 16-0, while the epee and sabre squads are each 15-1.

The NU fencing team will travel to Colorado Springs, Colo., next weekend for the Air Force Invitational. Colorado Springs is home to the United States Fencing Association.
