Swimmer Kellan O'Connor Earns Big Ten Co-Swimmer of the Week Honors

Jan. 22, 2002

EVANSTON, Ill. - Kellan O'Connor (Phoenix, Ariz./Brophy Prep), a junior swimmer on the Northwestern men's team, was named the Big Ten Co-Swimmer of the Week for Jan. 21.

A 2001 All-America selection, O'Connor was an essential part of NU's (5-1, 0-1 Big Ten) victory over Illinois-Chicago last week.

O'Connor took first place in three events and shattered the UIC pool record in the 200 butterfly with an NCAA B standard time of 1:47.62. The previous record of 1:50.73 had stood since 1999.

O'Connor also won the 200 IM in 1:54.47 and was part of the victorious 400 medley relay team (3:22.69).

This is the first Swimmer of the Week nod for Northwestern this season.

For the 2001-02 season, O'Connor has 10 first-place finishes and holds the top times among the team in the 100 (49.44) and 200 fly events (1:47.62) as well as the 400 IM (3:58.63). His marks in these events place him among the College Quick 50, a national compilation of times.

O'Connor is also a member of the 200 and 400 medley relay teams that hold the Wildcats' top times this season.

The Wildcats return to the pool Feb. 8 for a meet at Iowa.
