Northwestern Makes Its Mark on Fall Academic All-Big Ten Teams

Dec. 10, 2001

EVANSTON, Ill. - Northwestern student-athletes have increased their presence on the Academic All-Big Ten teams for the 2001 fall season, as announced by the Conference today. To be eligible for Academic All-Big Ten selection, an athlete must be a letterwinner in at least their second academic year at their institution and carry a career grade-point average (GPA) of 3.0 or better.

In all, Northwestern placed 54 student-athletes on the six fall teams, the highest figure since 1998. Football registered 15 selections, followed by volleyball's nine. Men's soccer and women's cross country each totaled eight honorees, while field hockey and women's soccer accounted for seven apiece.

Seven Wildcat seniors are earning their third award in as many years: Maria Badaracco of cross country, Kathryn Breed of field hockey, Pete Chapman, Pete Konopka and Billy Silva of football, and Katie Kovatch and Susan McCreery of women's soccer. Additionally, 16 of this season's honorees were also Academic All-Conference in 2000.
