Athens, Ga. - Carmen Cosgrove (Perth, Western Australia/Nebraska) became the first Northwestern swimmer to qualify for the NCAAs this year as the junior finished first in the 100 fly with a time of 54.21. Cosgrove's win helped propel the squad into second place with 405 points. They still trail second-ranked Georgia by 175 points with one more day of competition scheduled for Sunday.
Cosgrove's time in the 100 fly is the second-best time in the nation this year and is a personal best for the Nebraska transfer. Also picking up points for the Wildcats in the 100 fly were Merritt Adams (Norcross, Ga./The Lovett School), who placed third with an NCAA "B" time of 54.80 and Rachel Johnson (Champaign, Ill./Centennial), who placed eighth with another NCAA "B" time (56.06).
Johnson also took fourth in the 400 IM earlier in the meet, touching the wall in 4:20.09. That time was also an NCAA "B" time.
Susie Sample (LaGrange, Ill./Lyons Township) was the Wildcats' other individual finalist of the evening, taking home seventh in the 100 backstroke (56.74).
In the relays, NU placed second in the 800 freestyle with an NCAA "B" time of 7:25.90.
Action will wrap up tomorrow with preliminaries at 9:30 a.m. and finals at 3 p.m.
