EVANSTON, Ill. - For the first time in the history of the Northwestern's men's swimming and diving program, NU begins the season ranked. The Wildcats debuted at No. 20 in the first edition of the 2001 College Swimming Coaches Association of America's national top 25.
"This is the only time we've ever been ranked, going back to when they started the poll," head coach Bob Groseth said Wednesday.
A total of six Big Ten teams are among the Top 25, including No. 8 Minnesota, No. 9 Michigan, No. 15 Wisconsin, No. 16 Penn State, and No. 24 Purdue. Ohio State was among the schools receiving votes.
"I think it's an indication that other coaches recognize the talent we have here," said Groseth.
Northwestern will have to earn its ranking right from the start, taking on No. 15 Wisconsin Thursday in Madison along the with the Wildcat women. The co-ed dual will begin at 6 p.m. The men then host Eastern Michigan on Saturday, while the women-ranked 21st in the country-compete against No. 24 Minnesota. The meet will begin at 2 p.m. in the Norris Aquatics Center.
