PALM DESERT, Calif. -- Strong second- and third-round play by Northwestern's men's golf team catapulted the Wildcats from 13th to fourth place at The Prestige at Palm Desert, played on the Firecliff course at the Desert Willow Golf Resort on Tuesday.
Northwestern finished the second and third rounds with scores of 281 and 279, a combined 16-under-par, to complete the two-day tourney at 12-under, eight strokes behind tourney champion Washington. The combined second- and third-round scores (560) were the best of any team in the tournament.
"I think we're going to be a pretty good golf team this year, but we haven't really shown it yet this fall," said sixth-year coach Pat Goss. "For the first time this year, we played the way I think we're capable of. This was a good way to end the fall season."
Sophomore Tom Johnson (Fair Oaks, Calif./Del Campo), the 2001 Big Ten Freshman of the Year, led the second-day charge, firing a 68 and a 69 to finish 7-under-par for the tourney, six strokes back of co-medalists Dustin Bray (North Carolina) and Brock Mackenzie (Washington).
Sophomore T.C. Ford (Covington, La./Mandeville) also had a solid second day, shooting a 69 and 69 to finish 1-under-par and 23rd overall. Teammate Scott Harrington (Portland, Ore./Jesuit) also placed 23rd after shooting rounds of 75 and 69 after a team-best 71 on Monday. Senior Chris Thayer (Richmond, Va./Godwin) finished 43rd (73-69-77=219) while newcomer Bjorn Widerstedt (Vasteras, Sweden/Flagler College) was 66th (76-76-72=224).
The Prestige, hosted by the UC Davis and Stanford, is in its second year of bringing together 20 of the nation's top academic and golf-playing universities. The Prestige has quickly become one of the nation's top collegiate golf tournaments with the help of presenting sponsors Kohlberg Kravis Roberts and Co., Intrawest, Hewlett-Packard, Infotopia, KESQ/KDFX, The City of Palm Desert, and the Desert Willow Golf Resort.
The Wildcats were the defending tournament champions.
