Ohio State Wins 2001 Big Ten Field Hockey Tournament

Nov. 4, 2001

EVANSTON, Ill. - The Ohio State Buckeyes held off the Iowa Hawkeyes, 2-1, to win the 2001 Big Ten Field Hockey Tournament hosted by Northwestern University. On a cool, windy afternoon at Lakeside Field, Iowa had the momentum late in the game but the OSU defense came up big to thwart any Iowa heroics.

All-tournament team member Jenee Doto of Ohio State started the scoring when she received a pass from Lorena Margni eight yards in front of the Iowa goal and put it past Hawkeye goalkeeper Barb Weinberg.

Iowa responded eight minutes later, Rebekah Heayrin was in the right place at the right time. She found a loose ball in front of the OSU goal and flipped it past Buckeye goalkeeper Allison Blanton.

Still in the first half, OSU took the lead for good when all-tournament team member Lorena Margni converted a low-angle shot from the baseline that found the back of the Iowa net.

After the game, tournament officials announced the all-tournament team and MVP honors. Each member of the conference is awarded one player to the team with semifinalists receiving two players. The 2001 all-tournament team is as follows:
