Wildcats Capture Third Place In BCA Invitational With 59-51 Win Over San Jose State

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) - Winston Blake scored 15 points and Jitim Young 14 as Northwestern beat San Jose State 59-51 in the third-place game of the Black Coaches Association Invitational on Friday night.

Northwestern (2-1) shot 48 percent, but made just 11-of-25 free throws.

Moises Alvarez led San Jose State (1-2) with 17 points and made 4-of-9 from 3-point range.

Vedran Vukusic hit two 3-pointers during a 12-2 run that put Northwestern up 18-7 midway through the first half. San Jose State then switched to an aggressive two-three zone and kept the Wildcats from scoring a field goal for more than seven minutes, cutting the lead to 19-16.

Northwestern made 11-of-17 shots in the first half, but had 11 turnovers - most of which came on bad passes to the post.

San Jose State had 12 turnovers in the first half and made just 8-of-24 shots to trail 29-21 at halftime.

Northwestern extended the lead to 42-31 lead on a dunk by Tavaras Hardy, but San Jose State tied it 42 with 9:43 left after Alvarez scored eight straight points.

Northwestern scored seven straight, taking a 54-46 lead with 1:30 left on a backdoor layup by Winston Blake, then held on despite making just 5-of-11 free throws down the stretch.

Hardy had 13 points and 11 rebounds.
