Men's and Women's Swimming and Diving Both in Second Place After Day One of the NU Invite

Evanston, Ill. - Both the men's and women's swimming and diving squads are chasing Purdue for the lead after the first session at the annual NU Invite. The Wildcat men are 67 points back with 251 points, while the women trail the Boilermakers by 49 points at 316.

Nicole Bernard was the only Northwestern woman to place first in an event and she did so with a personal-best time in the 500 freestyle. Her time of 4:54.44 was also a NCAA 'B" standards time.

Rachel Johnson finished second in the 200 IM with a season-best 2:05.19. The relays also took second, touching the wall in the 200 free relay in 1:34.45 and at 3:50.87 in the 400 medley.

In diving, Ashley Carter helped the Wildcats' cause by taking third on the 3-meter (432.05).

On the men's side, the 'Cats picked-up four individual wins. Tony Swanson posted an NCAA "B" standard time in the 200 IM with a season-best 1:50.09. Mike Shue won the 500 free, touching in 4:29.72. Nick Barnes placed first in the 50 free, sprinting to a 21.09 finish. Elliot Massuda rounded out the NU winners, as the senior took top honors on the 1-meter (296.95).

Action will continue tomorrow with morning preliminaries at 10 a.m. Finals will take place at 5 p.m. Sunday's preliminaries will start at 9 a.m. with finals at 3 p.m.
