Nov. 15, 2001

EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern football players Austin King (Cincinnati, Ohio/Purcell Marian) and Sean Wieber (Sandusky, Ohio/Perkins) have been named to the Verizon Academic All-District squad, announced today by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).

King and Wieber are now eligible for Verizon Academic All-America honors, which will be announced December 10. To be nominated, the student-athlete must be a starter or important reserve with at least a 3.20 cumulative grade point average for his career.

A junior, King carries a 3.29 GPA in secondary teaching and is the starting center for the Wildcats. King, a 2000 honorable mention all-conference selection, had started 29 straight games for Northwestern until an ankle injury kept him out of the starting lineup this past Saturday versus Iowa. A 1999 Football News freshman All-American, King is on the 2001 Rimington Award (nation's top center) Watch List. He was named to the Big Ten's 2000 academic all-conference team.

A senior, Wieber carries a 3.34 GPA in political science and has started six games this season for Northwestern. Injuries in recent weeks have sidelined Wieber for two games and limited his playing time. He presently ranks 10th on the team's defensive tackle list with 35 hits. Wieber opened the year with a season-high eight tackles in the road win at UNLV. He was named to the Big Ten's 2000 academic all-conference team.
