EAST LANSING, Mich. - Senior Jamie Sahara (Santa Maria, Calif./St. Joseph) will play in a semifinal game of the backdraw Monday at the men's tennis Big Ten Indoor Singles Championships in East Lansing, Mich.
Sahara lost in the opening round to Chris Wettengel of Minnesota (6-4, 6-1), but has posted four consecutive wins to advance to the semifinals.
NU's Ahmed Wahla (Lahore, Pakistan/Lahore American School) earned a spot in the championship game of the alternative 7-8 Singles Draw, but was defeated by Sounak Chatterjee of Purdue (6-2, 6-2). Wahla won three matches to advance to the championship.
For the Wildcats, freshman Thomas Hanus (Palatine, Ill./Palatine), senior Ryan Edlefsen (Eden Prairie, Minn./Bloomington Jefferson) and junior Josh Axler (Huntington, N.Y./Walt Whitman) had the most success in the main draw. Hanus made it to the fourth round of the draw before losing to the No. 1 seed, Thomas Haug of Minnesota. Haug had defeated Edlefsen in the third round, while Axler fell in the third round to third-seed Henry Bean of Michigan.
NU's only seeded player, Jackie Jenkins (College Park, Ga./Westlake), came in as the No. 4 seed, but was defeated in the first round by Michigan's Matt Lockin (6-2, 7-5). Jenkins defeated a pair of players from Michigan State, Mike Hodge (6-4, 6-3) and Jimmy McGuire (6-3, 6-1) in the consolation round before losing to 13th-seed Vince Ng of Ohio State (7-6[4], 6-4).
Ng defeated NU's Chuck Perrin (Atlanta, Ga./The Walker School) in the consolation round, after Perrin went 2-2 in the tournament.
