EVANSTON, Ill. - The 20th-ranked Northwestern men's swimming and diving team defeated Eastern Michigan, 172-120, in a dual at Norris Aquatics Center Saturday afternoon.
NU took first in 14 of 16 events, including senior Elliot Massuda's (Valparaiso, Ind./Valparaiso) 1-meter and 3-meter diving events.
Junior Kellan O'Connor (Phoenix, Ariz./Brophy Prep) took first in three events-the 100 back (51.29), 200 fly (1:51.43) and the 400 IM (4:03.38).
Sophomore Tony Swanson (Coon Rapids, Minn./Coon Rapids) also enjoyed a pair of victories in the 200 free (1:41.69) and the 200 back (1:50.42). Swanson and teammates Nick Barnes (Frankfort, Ind./Frankfort), Adam Kennedy (Flossmoor, Ill./Homewood-Flossmoor) and Mark Hamming (Lake Forest, Ill./Lake Forest) finished first in the 400 free relay with a time of 3:05.00.
Junior Mike Shue (Ft. Myers, Fla./Ft. Myers) was the final Wildcat to turn in two top performances on the day. He took first in the distance events, the 1000 free (9:28.27) and the 500 free (4:35.81).
The meet started off with a mix-up in the schedule of events, which led to NU forfeiting the 200 medley relay. The meet was all NU from there, as the Wildcats won the next six events. NU's streak was tripped up by EMU's Jeff Luhn, who won the 100 free in 46.35, before the 'Cats continued on to victory.
The 2-1 Wildcats are next in action Nov. 16-18 as they co-host the annual NU Invitational with the women's team. The opponents include Louisville, Southern Illinois and Big Ten rival Purdue.
