EVANSTON, Ill. - The Northwestern field hockey team ended its 2001 campaign Friday with a 6-1 loss in the first round of the Big Ten Tournament to Michigan. The third-seeded Wolverines used a powerful offense to tame the 'Cats, scoring two goals in the first eight minutes and cruising from there.
U-of-M's April Fronzoni led the way with three goals, while Kristi Gannon scored two and Katy Moyneur chipped in one. The Wolverines, ranked fith in the latest STX/NFHCA National Coaches Poll, outshot the 'Cats 19-9 and managed 11 penalty corners compared to three for Northwestern.
Freshman Candice Cooper (Winnetka, Ill./New Trier) scored Northwestern's only goal of the game, her second goal this season.
Sophomore Katie Hall (Lake Bluff, Ill./Lake Forest) and junior Kendra Mesa (Madison, Conn./Daniel Hand) split the goalkeeping duties. Hall saved six shots while Mesa had two stops.
