SCARSDALE, N.Y. -- Heading into the final round of The Tillinghast golf tournament, Northwestern needs to make up 11 shots to draw even with Illinois, the round-one leader.
The Wildcats sit in a third-place tie with Penn State and Maryland, 11 strokes behind Illinois and eight behind second-place Minnesota. Six of the top eight schools in the 24-team event, hosted by St. John's University, come from the Big Ten.
Senior Chris Thayer (Richmond, Va./Godwin) shot a team-best 70, three strokes behind Illinois' Geoff Lound. Overall, Thayer is is tied for fourth place with Maryland's John Moheyer and Illinois' James Lepp.
Tom Johnson (Fair Oaks, Calif./Del Campo) shot a three-over-par 73, while T.C. Ford (Covington, La./Mandeville) fired a 76. Scott Harrington (Portland, Ore./Jesuit) and Bjorn Widerstedt (Vasteras, Sweden/Flagler College) rounded out the Wildcat contingent with respective scores of 77 and 78.
The final round of The Tillinghast is being played Tuesday, Oct. 23.
