KALAMAZOO, Mich. - With just 50 seconds left in regulation Friday, it looked like the Northwestern men's soccer team was going to get the elusive first win of 2001. In a match that was tied, 1-1, freshman forward Mike Henry (Wheeling, Ill./Wheeling) dribbled past the Bronco defense and fired a shot at the WMU goal. The ball, though, hit the inside of the right post and ricocheted back across to the goalkeeper, who pounced on the ball.
The match continued to overtime, and less than three minutes in WMU's Chad Wiseman beat a couple of NU defenders in the box and then dished the ball out to Tony Moucloulis, who knocked in the gamewinner.
The loss was the first in OT for the 'Cats this year, but it was their seventh one-goal defeat.
WMU opened the day's scoring on the first of its eight corner kicks. Junior Mike Bravo's service from the left corner drifted in toward the middle of the box, where Wiseman headed the ball into the upper right corner for his fourth score of the year.
The 'Cats drew level before halftime. Sophomore Jeremy Cook (Hudson Wis./Hudson) headed home a throw-in from junior Steven Jedlinski (Palatine, Ill./Fremd) from eight yards out in the 36th minute of play. The goal was the first of Cook's career, and the assist was Jedlinski's third of the season.
After halftime, NU goalie sophomore Adam Grossman (Potomac, Md./Churchill) made three saves to send the game into overtime. The Wildcats' best opportunity to put the game away was Henry's shot, but the ball just could not find its way past WMU goalie Ian Spooner. Spooner had replaced starting Bronco goalie Mark Howell at the break.
Because the Lewis match has been canceled, the 'Cats are off until Oct. 28 when they travel to Northern Illinois for a nonconference game. Game time is set for 2:15.
