Women's Soccer Edged by Illinois, 1-0

Oct. 5, 2001

EVANSTON, Ill. - In a hard-fought game at Lakeside Field Friday, the Illinois women got a breakaway goal in the second half and that proved to be the difference in a 1-0 soccer decision.

Northwestern fell to 2-6-1 (1-3-1 Big Ten), while Illinois improved to 5-4 (3-1 Big Ten).

Tara Hurless was able to get behind the Northwestern defense in the 60th minute, took the ball in along the left side and fired a shot past NU goalkeeper Susie McCreery's right.

Illinois outshot Northwestern, 9-5, but created several excellent chances. McCreery came up with a pair of huge saves in the first half. At the other end, Northwestern's best chance came when Katie Hertz headed a corner kick that went just over the crossbar.

Aileen Guiney also had an excellent chance in the first half, but her shot from the top of the goal circle went wide.

Northwestern is home again on Sunday, hosting Iowa at 1 p.m. That match will be the first half of 'Soccer Sunday' at Lakeside, as the Wildcat men's team will play Western Illinois following the women's match.
