EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Northwestern field hockey team, playing its first game in 13 days, fell to No. 7 Michigan State, 5-0, Saturday afternoon.

The Wildcats fell to 1-6 on the season, while the Spartans improved to 5-3. The game was the Big Ten opener for both teams.

Michigan State got on the board in the 14th minute when Bridget Cooper knocked home a pass from Annebet Beerman. Six minutes later, Theresa Pusateri made it 2-0 with an unassisted goal.

The other three goals came in the second half and were scored by Maureen Halstead, Cynthia Martin and Sophie Rosmalen. Martin also had an assist for the day.

In the Northwestern goal, Kendra Mesa played 45 minutes and made four saves, Katie Hall closed out the game and made one stop.

Northwestern was outshot, 15-4, by the Spartans.

The Wildcats will be back in action next weekend, hosting a pair of games at Lakeside Field. On Friday, Ohio State comes to town for a 3 p.m. faceoff, and on Sunday Northwestern meets Stanford at 1 p.m.
