EVANSTON, Ill. - The Northwestern women's soccer team fell to an opportunistic St. Mary's (CA) team, 3-0, Saturday afternoon in the first home match for new Wildcat head coach Jenny Haigh.
Katie Frattone, who captured Rookie of the Week honors in the West Coast Conference last week, showed she is not eager to give up the honor. The St. Mary's freshman had two first-half goals to power the Gaels to the victory. Her first goal came on a setup by Sarah Takekawa, and the second came when a Northwestern player sent an errant pass that Frattone turned into a breakaway goal.
St. Mary's (3-0-0) closed out the scoring in the 75th minute when Lucianne Crenshaw broke free and pushed a long shot past oncoming Northwestern goalkeeper Susie McCreery (Glenview, Ill./Glenbrook South).
NU (1-2-0) took the loss despite outshooting St. Mary's, 13-9. The Wildcats' best chance came 10 minutes into the match, when Kristen Pearce (Morrison, Colo./Bear Creek) headed a shot past Gaels' keeper Ruth Montgomery but off the post. The ball was cleared before Northwestern could convert the rebound.
In the second match of Saturday's women's soccer doubleheader, Brigham Young played a physical game and downed Minnesota (1-2-0), 3-0. The Cougars (2-1-0) won despite the absence of Aleisha Cramer, a sophomore who is playing with the U.S. National Team this weekend.
Kelly Hunsberger put BYU on the board in the 30th minute. A long free kick was headed back across the goalmouth by Sarah Yee, where Hunsberger powered in a header. With just 1:47 left in the half, it was Yee's turn to score, as she took Kimmie Davis' first touch of the match and scored from right in front.
Davis closed it out in the 82nd minute by tapping in a short cross from Kim Devine.
These four teams will play another doubleheader Monday at Lakeside Field. Minnesota and St. Mary's kick things off at 11:30 a.m., followed by Northwestern and BYU at approximately 2 p.m.
