Columbus, Ohio - Northwestern men's soccer lost for the first time this season, falling 2-1 to 18th-ranked Ohio State Sunday, Sept. 2 in Columbus, Ohio.
NU's freshman goalkeeper Ryan Pederson (Westerville, Ohio/Westerville North) stayed busy in the net as the Buckeyes fired 13 shots on goal in the two team's conference opener. OSU jumped ahead quickly, scoring the game's first goal less than two minutes into the game. Pederson settled down after the opening minutes and went on to make 11 saves in the contest. OSU's other goal came in the 64th minute when Andy Rosenband headed in a crossing pass from John Tomaino for his second goal of the game.
The Buckeyes played relentless defense as the 'Cats earned just one shot on goal the entire game. However, the 'Cats took advantage of their one opportunity, scoring their only goal with 20 minutes left to play. Junior Steven Jedlinski (Palatine, Ill./Fremd) fed teammate Paul Elkins (Glenview, Ill./Glenbrook), who headed in the pass from six yards out, which cut OSU's lead in half. Time expired before NU would get another shot at the goal.
