EVANSTON, Ill. - Sheila McMillen, a 1999 Notre Dame graduate, was named to the women's basketball staff today by head coach June Olkowski. McMillen joins Cleve Wright and Tricie Johnson as assistant women's basketball coaches.
"Sheila comes in already having a good understanding of the academic and athletic pressures that a Northwestern student-athlete faces," said Olkowski. "Her experience and knowledge of the game will definitely compliment our staff."
McMillen comes to Evanston after spending two years as the third assistant coach at Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo, Mich. Her primary responsibilities for the Broncos included preparation of opposing team scouting reports, organizing and instructing preseason and postseason conditioning and aiding in the on-campus recruiting process. She also participated in the on-court coaching of perimeter players while coordinating summer camps at WMU.
McMillen helped coach the Broncos to a 2000 WNIT appearance and a 14-2 Mid-American Conference record. As a student-athlete, McMillen assisted in both the Notre Dame and UCLA girls summer camps and served as a WNBA intern in the summer of 1997.
Prior to entering the coaching field, McMillen was a standout guard at Notre Dame. Serving as a team captain her junior and senior seasons, McMillen set two Irish three-point records and one Big East record for most three-pointers in a game (8). She was named Big East second-team in 1999 and to the Big East All-Tournament team that same season. McMillen was selected to the Big East Academic All-Star team in 1999. She also competed in the 1999 ESPN/Intersport 3 Point Shoot-out her senior year.
Before entering the college ranks, McMillen was an AAU participant and received two-time AAU All-American recognition while leading her team to two national championships in 1993 and 1995.
