Burden Falls in Third Round at U.S. Women's Amateur

Aug. 2, 2001

WICHITA, Kan. - Northwestern junior Elizabeth Burden held the lead more than halfway through her third-round match with Korea's Joo-Mi Kim Thursday afternoon, but Kim finally wrested the decision on the 15th hole and took a 2-up decision at the U.S. Women's Amateur at Flint Hills National GC.

Kim won the match during a three-hole stretch that began at No. 14. Losing 1-up to Burden, Kim parred Nos. 14, 15 and 16 while Burden bogeyed all three. That gave the 2-up lead and momentum to Kim, although Burden certainly made things interesting on No. 17.

Teeing off on the par-3, 149-yard 17th, Burden knocked down a hole-in-one to win the hole and cut Kim's the lead to 1-up. However, needing to win the par-5 18th hole to force a playoff, Burden shot a bogey while Kim birdied. That gave Kim the hole and the win.

Burden had gotten the early advantage by winning the second and third holes to take a 2-up lead. Kim got one of the holes back at No. 4, then squared the match by winning again at No. 6. Burden would take the lead three more times -- at Nos. 8, 11 and 13 -- but each time Kim came right back to win the next hole and square the match. That set the stage for the dramatic finish.

Kim moved on to play Thailand's Virada Nirapathpongporn in a quarterfinal match Thursday afternoon.
