Chapel Hill, N.C. - The Northwestern women's golf team climbed five spots in the standings after the second round of play at the NCAA East Regional. The Wildcats are now tied with Louisville for 13th place, 15 strokes shy of the eighth place. The top eight teams will advance to the NCAA championship round, to be conducted at Howey-in-the-Hills, Fla., May 22-25.
NU improved its Round 2 score at Finley Golf Course (par 72, 6,211) by six shots, mostly in part to sophomore Elizabeth Burden's 1-over-par 73. Burden shaved five strokes off her first-round score and is now tied for 25th place individually. Junior Emily Gilley also settled down after an opening-round 79, firing a 2-over-par 74 in the second round.
If NU does not qualify as a team, Burden and Gilley have a chance to advance as individuals -- the top two individuals not on the eight qualifying teams also receive a national bid. Heading into the final day, Burden is third on that list and Gilley is seventh.
