Urbana, Ill - In between early showers and an afternoon rain delay in Urbana, Ill., the Northwestern men's golf team shot an opening round 289 at the Big Ten Championships. The championships, hosted by the University of Illinois, are being played at Stone Creek Golf Club (par 72-7,118 yards). NU is tied for third with Ohio State, four shots off the pace set by Michigan State.
Individually for the `Cats, Luke Donald is one shot off the lead after a first round 70. Purdue's Ryan Miller and Ohio State's Justin Collins lead the pack with rounds of 69. Scott Harrington fired an opening round 1-under-par 71. Teammate Chris Thayer was right behind him, shooting even par on the day. Tom Johnson and T.C. Ford each carded a 76 in the opening 18.
Golfers will play 36 holes tomorrow with tee time set for 7:30 a.m. The championships will wrap up with a final 18 on Sunday.
