Evanston, Ill. - Jackie Jenkins defeated Scott Mayer at No. 2 singles (6-3, 5-7, 7-5) to clinch the Northwestern men's tennis team's, 4-2, win over Purdue at the Big Ten Championships in Madison, Wis.
Northwestern picked up the match's first point by winning at No. 2 and 3 doubles. Josh Axler and Brad Erickson won 8-6 at No. 3, while Joost Hol and Ryan Edlefsen needed a tie-breaker at No. 2 to clinch the doubles point.
In singles, Axler easily handled Laith-Al-Agba at No. 6 (6-2, 6-2) to post his eight straight win. Jamie Sahara then defeated Carl McCafferty in a three-set battle (6-4, 3-6, 6-1) at No. 4 to set up Jenkins' deciding victory.
The Wildcats will face the winner of the Ohio State/Wisconsin match in a semifinal tomorrow at 2 pm. NU fell 5-2 to OSU in the regular season, but swept Wisconsin, 7-0.
