Wrestlers Fall to Michigan, 36-7

EVANSTON, Ill. - The Northwestern wrestling team ended the regular season Sunday afternoon with a loss to fifth-ranked Michigan, 36-7, at Welsh-Ryan Arena. Northwestern came right out of the gates winning the first two matches and taking a 7-0 lead. Freshman 149-pounder Ryan Cumbee major decisioned James Gonzalez 13-2 in the first match and sophomore Jason Erwinski followed with a 7-2 decision over Pat Owen. Cumbee improved his record to 17-11 while Erwinski upped his overall record to 16-4, 7-1 in conference action.

Michigan's 10th-ranked Charles Martelli got the Wolverines rolling, pinning Ryan Kane at 165 pounds. Michigan never looked back after that as they rattled off the next seven matches, outscoring Northwestern 36-0. In those eight matches Michigan scored one fall, one technical fall and three major decisions as they pulled away from the Wildcats.
