Evanston, Ill. - The fourth-ranked Northwestern fencing squad once again assumed the role of rude host on Saturday, defeating four of five opponents during the second weekend of the NU Duals. However, NU was was defeated for the first time this season by seventh-ranked Notre Dame. The Fighting Irish edged the Wildcats 14-13. Northwestern dominated scoring throughout the day finishing with an overall bout record of 96-27. Notre Dame was the only school to defeat any of the weapons.
FOIL: The foil squad finished the day 31-14, including a shutout against Lawrence University. The Cats were led once again by junior captain Kristen Dorf (St. Paul, Minn./St. Paul Paul Academy), who went 8-2. Another Wildat who had a strong showing was sophomore Eva Mendelsohn. She posted a 7-2 record for the day. The foil squad's only loss of the day came at the hands of Notre Dame.
EPEE: Each member of the epee squad posted at least five wins, as they dominated the competition with a 39-6 record. Junior Jennifer Greenebaum (Mendham, N.J./Pingry) and sophomore Kate Rudkin (Boulder, Colo./Boulder) recorded unblemished 8-0 marks.
SABRE: The sabre squad also dropped only one match during the tournament. Senior captain Carly Wells (Arlington Heights, Ill./John Hersey) powered the Wildcats with an 8-1 record and fellow senior Jessica Brower (Sacramento, Calif./Mira Loma) added a strong 7-2 finish. The squad ended with a 26-7 record and shutout the University of Chicago and Case Western Reserve University.
The loss to Notre Dame marked the Wildcats' first dual meet loss in nearly a year. The Wildcats last loss came at the Notre Dame Duals on Jan. 30-31, 2000, to Penn State.
