Men's Swimming Leads Iowa, Trails Ohio State After Day One

EVANSTON, Ill. - After day one, the Northwestern men's swimming and diving squad is split in a pair of dual meets against Ohio State and Iowa. After Friday's action, the Wildcats lead Iowa, 117-82, while trailing Ohio State, 111-93. Ohio State leads Iowa, 107-95, in the double-dual meet, taking place at the Norris Aquatics Center on Northwestern's campus.

Sophomore Kellan O'Connor (Phoenix, Ariz./Brohy Prepatory) broke a pool and school record on his way to a victory in the 200 butterfly. His time of 1:46.59 breaks his previous record from a year ago by .39 of a second.

Other winners for Northwestern included Mike Shue in the 1,650 freestyle (15:44.37), Aaron McCracken in the 100 breaststroke (55.97), Nick Barnes in the 50 freestyle (20.95) and Tony Swanson in the 200 individual medley (1:50.88).

On the day, Northwestern saw 19 season best times bettered, including the times of each of the five Wildcat winners. O'Connor's time in the 200 butterfly and McCracken's time in the 100 breaststroke each met the NCAA qualifying B standard.

Leading the way for Ohio State was Brian Malich, winning the 200 freestyle (1:39.05) while Heath Knowling won the 1-meter (339.15) and 3-meter (328.05) diving events. OSU also took second and third in the 3-meter diving event.

Iowa opened the meet with a win in the 400 medley relay (3:21.83), and Nick Hinz won the 100 backstroke (49.61) for the Hawkeyes.

Northwestern, Ohio State and Iowa will be back in action tomorrow at 11 a.m. The schedule of events include the 200 medley relay, 500 freestyle, 200 backstroke, 200 breaststroke, 100 freestyle, 100 butterfly, 400 individual medley and the 800 freestyle relay.
