Jackie Jenkins Wins Big Ten Singles Consolation Title

Jan. 15, 2001

Evanston, Ill. - Sophomore Jackie Jenkins (College Park, Ga./Westlake) defeated Carl McCafferty of Purdue in straight sets, 7-6(2), 6-2, to open up the spring season with the Big Ten singles consolation title.

Jenkins fell to the #2 seed and eventual champion Jason Marshall in the round of 32, which put him in the consolation bracket. However, he fought back through five matches to garnish the title. Jenkins did catch a break, as two of his opponents withdrew from the tournament due to injuries.

In the 7-8-9 draw, sophomore Russell Bennett (Wilmette, Ill./New Trier) lost his championship title match to Vince Ng of Ohio State in straight sets, 7-6 (4), 6-1. Bennett cruised through his first two matches of the tournament with easy two-set victories.
