EVANSTON, Ill. -
Northwestern vs. Ohio State
Big Ten Tournament
Ann Arbor, Mich.
SUMMARY:
The Northwestern field hockey team dropped its first-round Big Ten Tournament game to 15th-ranked Ohio State by a score of 1-0. Senior Jessica Yates (Lake Forest, Ill./Lake Forest) was the bright spot for Northwestern, as she came up with 10 saves in a game that saw the Buckeyes outshot the Wildcat's 16-1. She entered the game leading the Big Ten in saves (150) and tied for second in save percentage (.794). Her 10 saves upped her career total to 515, a Northwestern record.
Ohio State's defense proved to be too much for Northwestern's offense as the Wildcats managed just one shot on Buckeye goalkeeper Allison Blanton. Lindsay Wright (St. Catherines, Ontario/Ridley College) had NU's shot on goal.
"I think Ohio State got the better of us the first time we played this year," said head coach Marisa Didio. "Statistically there is quite a gap between our stats and there's, but I think the difference in this game was our inability to attack. We didn't get our corner team up there and we need our offensive corner team to score goals. I was pleased with our team's performance, I feel we've come a long way this year."
Haley Fox scored the game's only goal with 12:32 left in the first period. She received a pass from Jenee Doto and put it past a diving Yates.
The Buckeyes improve to 12-7 overall, advancing to the semifinal round and a meeting with top seed Michigan.
