Oct. 16, 2000

EVANSTON, Ill. - Northwestern University has named its Athletes of the Week for October 16. The selections were based on athletic action from October 9-15.

MALE -- Teddy Johnson, Football
Senior Teddy Johnson (Elgin, Ill./Larkin) was one of the bright spots in the football team's 41-28 loss to Purdue Saturday. The wideout scored a pair of touchdown passes, the first coming from seven yards out and the second coming from 41 yards. With the scores Johnson set a single-season record for consecutive games with a TD reception -- he has now scored in five straight contests. The overall record of six consecutive games is held by Richard Buchanan and bridged the 1989 and 1990 seasons. Johnson also had 126 yards in kickoff returns, the first 100-yard game in that category since Sam Simmons had 131 in the 1999 season opener against Miami (Ohio).

FEMALE -- Aileen Guiney, Soccer
Sophomore midfielder Aileen Guiney (Naperville, Ill./North) assisted both goals in the 2-1 win over Ohio State on Friday. The first goal came in the sixth minute when she passed the ball downfield to Kristen Pearce, who scored from the middle of the box. In the 67th minute, Guiney received a deflection at the top of the box from an NU corner kick. She flicked the ball over to an open Kelli Wilson who scored the gamewinner from 20 yards out. On Sunday, Guiney kept the `Cats offensively alive against #6 Penn State in a 1-0 loss.
