EVANSTON, Ill. -
Northwestern played a tough defensive game in a loss to #6 Penn State, 1-0. The only goal came in the 39th minute, when PSU's Heidi Drummond sprinted down the right side of the field with the ball and passed to Stephanie Smith in the box. Smith took the shot from five yards out to score.
Penn State held most of the action in the first half, as the Wildcats only got off one shot in the first 45 minutes. In the second half, Northwestern got more control on their side of the field and fired four shots.
The best scoring chance came in the 60th minute, when NU got a free kick straight out from the goal at 20 yards. Katie Kovatch (Glen Ellyn, Ill./Glenbard West) ran over the ball for a fake before Aileen Guiney (Naperville, Ill./North) fired a shot off. The goalkeeper jumped to her right from the fake, but the ball soared to the left and just missed the corner of the goal. Kristen Pearce (Morrison, Colo./Bear Creek) led the `Cats with two shots.
Northwestern was outshot, 12-5, and the Nittany Lions took eight corner kicks to NU's two.
