Northwestern Men's Golf Finishes Sixth at Windon Memorial

EVANSTON, Ill. -

The Oklahoma Sooners shot a 4-over-par 868 to win the 2000 Windon Memorial championship at The Knollwood Club in Lake Forest, Ill. OU fired rounds of 299-281-288=868, to finish seven strokes ahead of second place Southern California (294-284-297=875).

Hunter Mahan of USC took home medalist honors as he finished the 54-hole tournament with scores of 72-68-73=213, -3. Teammate Nick Jones (70-69-75=214, -2) finished in a tie for second with Cody Freeman of Oklahoma (72-69-73=214, -2).

Individually, low scores were at a premium with only 10 of 60 golfers finishing at or below par, including Northwestern's Luke Donald who finished in a tie for fourth with rounds of 72-70-73=215, -1.

NU's David Shaffer also finished in the top 20, shooting rounds of six-over par 74-75-73=222. Along with Shaffer, Chris Thayer (74-76-74=224, +8) finished 27th, Scott Harrington (81-73-73=227, +11) ended the day at 38th and playing in his first collegiate tournament, Mike Schumaker (82-79-74=235, +19) finished 53rd.

Tournament notes: Brandt Snedeker of Vanderbilt fired a hole in one on the par-3, 12th hole. On the par-5 16th, Northwestern's Scott Harrington hit his second shot into the cup for the rare double eagle, also known as an albatross. Freshman Hunter Mahan (USC) won his first collegiate tournament of his young career.
