Men's Golf Set to Host 2000 Windon Memorial Classic

EVANSTON, Ill. - Northwestern's men's golf gets set to host the 2000 Windon Memorial Classic. One of the country's premier collegiate golf tournaments, the event will be held Mon.-Tues., Oct. 2-3, at The Knollwood Club in Lake Forest, Ill. Thirty-six holes will be contested on Monday, with the final 18 on Tuesday.

The field for the 2000 Windon Memorial Classic, with 1999 finish in parenthesis, will be Duke (t-7th), Kent State (1st), Minnesota (6th), Mississippi State (DNP), North Florida (t-7th), Northwestern (2nd), Oklahoma (DNP), Stanford (3rd), Texas A&M (14th), Toledo (5th), USC (t-7th), and Vanderbilt (13th).

Seven of the 12 teams in the field qualified for last year's NCAA Division I Men's Golf Championship in Opelika, Ala. with three (Northwestern, Kent State and Minnesota) advancing to the final two days of competition. According to the Mastercard Collegiate Golf Rankings six of the 12 teams competing are ranked in the top 25: Northwestern (10), North Florida (17), Kent State (20), USC (22), Oklahoma (23) and Stanford (24).

Top individual's participating in this year's tournament include 1999 ACC conference champion Matt Krauss (Duke), Third-team All-American John Mills (Kent State), CDGA Amateur champion Joe Affrunti (Minn.), Honorable mention All-American David Bennett (North Florida), 1999 NCAA champion and 2000 Big Ten champion Luke Donald (NU), Kevin Stadler (USC) and 1999 U.S. Junior champion Hunter Mahan (USC).

According to a recent Golf World 2000-2001 season preview, seven individual golfers are ranked in the top 50: Luke Donald (NU, #2), Hunter Mahan (USC, #9), David Bennett (N. Fla.), Cody Freeman (Okla.), Matt Krauss (Duke), Jon Mills (Kent State), Kevin Stadler (USC).* The Mastercard Collegiate Individual Golf Rankings have Donald at No. 1 and Mills No. 21.

The Knollwood Club measures 6,951 yards and is a par 72. The club played host to the 1982 U.S. Mid-Amateur Championship and the 1956 U.S. Amateur. It was also the host of PGA Cup Matches of 1986.
