The Northwestern Wildcat women's volleyball team opened the 2000 campaign with a loss to sixth-ranked Nebraska, 15-4, 15-7, 15-6 in U.S. Bank Tournament action Friday night in Lincoln.
Senior Carmen Burbach (Columbus, Neb./Scotus Central Catholic) inched closer to reaching the 1,000 kill milestone, recording seven kills to lead the 'Cats. Burbach is now 48 kills shy of reaching the mark.
Kelli Meyer (Madison, Wis./Edgewood) recorded 20 assists in the contest. Earning the starting nod were freshmen Lindsay Pavlik (Laguna Beach, Calif./Mater Dei) and Molly Kamp (Stevensville, Mich./Lakeshore). Pavlik recorded four kills and three digs, while Kamp tallied three digs on the night.
Nebraska dominated the first game, but the Wildcats rebounded in game two to take their first lead at 6-5. But Nebraska -- which held NU to minus .033 hitting in the second game -- regained control on a Wildcat net serve, then scored seven straight points to cap the game, 15-7.
In the third game, the Huskers and Wildcats battled to a 4-4 tie before Nebraska won five straight points to take a 9-4 lead. Nebraska never looked back and went on to win the game, 15-6 and the match.
