EVANSTON, Ill. - Junior Emily Gilley and sophomore Elizabeth Burden both advanced to the 64-player field that competed in match play at the 100th U.S. Women's Amateur Championships in Portland, Ore.
In the first round, played the morning of August 9, Burden fell to Anna Grzebien in 20 holes while Gilley defeated Wendy Liang, 2-up. That afternoon, in the second round, Gilley downed Stephanie Keever, 2-and-1.
With the field reduced to 16 golfers -- down from 144 to start the championship -- Gilley fell to teen prodigy Aree Wongluekiet (Bradenton, Fla.) 8-and-6 in the morning match on Aug. 10.
The 100th U.S. Women's Amateur Championship is being played at Waverly Country Club, a par-71, 6,242-yard course.
Gilley and Burden were Northwestern's top two golfers from a year ago, leading the Wildcats to their first ever NCAA Championship tournament birth.
