Luke Donald to Compete in British Open

July 17, 2000

EVANSTON, Ill. - Northwestern senior-to-be Luke Donald qualified today for the 129th British Open, which will be contested this weekend on the Old Course at the Royal & Ancient Club of St. Andrews in Scotland.

Donald, the 1999 NCAA champion and the No. 1 golfer in this year's MasterCard college rankings, fired rounds of 63 and 68 for an 11-under total of 131 at Leven Links in Scotland to qualify.

The British Open, which starts this Thursday and is considered one of the four majors on the PGA Tour, marks Donald's fifth professional tournament and his second British Open. At last year's British Open, the Englishman was the low amateur but missed the cut by two strokes.
