Men's Golf Finishes Eighth at NCAA Championships

EVANSTON, ILL. - The Northwestern University men's golf team finished in eighth place at the NCAA Division I Men's Golf Championships in Opelika, Ala. NU shot rounds of 287-292-279 and 280 for a total of 1,138 to put them in the top 10 in three out of the last four years. The championships were held on Grand National Country Club's, par 72-7,003 yard, Lake Course.

Oklahoma State won a one-hole playoff against Georgia Tech to win the team competition finishing the tournament at 36-under-par (281-276-275-284). Northwestern and the University of Houston were the only two schools in the tournament to place two golfers in the top 10.

Senior Jess Daley (Kent, Wash./Kentwood) shot a final round 5-under-par, 67, to finish in a tie for third place. Daley shot rounds of 69-70-69-67 to finish 13-under-par for the tournament. He finished 10 strokes behind individual champion Charles Howell of Oklahoma State (67-66-63-69=265). Howell's victory marks the first time since 1990 that the individual champion was a member of the NCAA Championship team. Arizona State's Phil Mickelson won the 1990 title leading te Sun Devils to the team championhsip. In addition, this is only the second playoff in NCAA history as Oklahoma State defeated Stanford and Tiger Woods in a playoff in 1995 in Columbus, Ohio, at The Scarlet Course.

Junior Luke Donald (High Wycombe, Buckinghamshire, England/Royal Grammar School) finished two strokes behind Daley to place him in a tie for seventh with a four round total of 277. Donald shot rounds of 70-72-68-67. Both Donald and Daley shot every round of the championships at or under par to finish a combined 24-under-par.

Senior Josh Habig (Jasper, Ind./Jasper) ended the tourney at 5-over-par with rounds of 75-75-70-73. Senior Danny Riskam (Olney, Md./Sherwood) placed 75th firing rounds of 74-76-75-73 for a total of 298. Senior David Shaffer (Andover, Mass./Andover) finished with rounds of 74-79-72-78 equaling 303 finishing in a tie for 79th.
